Battery – monitoring your van’s battery health will help to prevent battery failure and consequent break downs.

Tyre tread – worn tyres can increase your chances of skidding and sliding. To prevent this – and to remain legal – your tyre depth should be at least 1.6mm. However, many professionals advise a tread depth of 2 to 3mm.

Brakes – correctly working brakes are essential all year round, but never more so than in winter. If you feel that your brakes have changed or they start to make a noise, it is a good idea to get them checked.

Lights – with dark mornings and even darker nights, lights are imperative to both see where you are going and alert other road users of your presence. Regularly checking all the lights on your vehicle – including brake lights - will ensure you can see and be seen.

Wiper blades and screen wash – keeping your windscreen clean of debris ensures you have a clear view of the road ahead. To do this you need to ensure your wiper blades are in good working order. If they are starting to leave streaks or smears, it may be time to replace them. Likewise, you should make sure that your screen wash is constantly filled. Using a ready-made solution will help to prevent your screen wash freezing in particularly low temperatures.

Windscreen – windscreens are more prone to cracks and chips during the colder months. Checking your windscreen regularly will help to prevent larger cracks developing.

Oil levels – Motor oil can behave differently in the cold, as it doesn’t flow as well. This can cause your engine to run inefficiently or take longer to heat up. It is advisable to check your oil levels regularly and top up when required.
